Clean water sources are vital to our everyday life and the ecosystems that rely on them.
Here are some actions you can take this month to improve the water quality in your area:
- Join a cleanup event. Find a local cleanup event near you this month—the County of San Diego has a list of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Events on their website to check out: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/CASAND/bulletins/3aa6b46
- Ensure your trash is disposed of properly. Put trash in a covered bin to keep debris from causing storm drain blockages and washing into our waterways. Also, be sure you are familiar with your local recycling options and guidelines.
- Do your duty—clean up your pet’s doody! Pet waste is not fertilizer and is a major source of contamination for our waterways. Clean up after your pup and make sure to dispose of their poop in a covered trash receptacle.
- Don’t dump your bulky items. Illegal dumping can contaminate our waterways and clog storm drains causing flooding during rain events. Properly disposing, donating and hauling your unwanted items can help keep our communities and watersheds clean.
- Wash your car wisely. Take your car to a car wash that captures and reuses the wash water instead of washing your car on your driveway or street. If you must wash your car on your property, use biodegradable car wash products and wash your car on permeable surfaces like grass to prevent harmful chemicals from entering storm drains.
